Choosing The Right Crib
Are you expecting your first baby? Maybe this is your second or third baby. Either way you are going to need a crib. Do you know what to look for in buying a crib? What cribs have been recalled and what cribs are affordable?
I know that when I was looking for a crib, price and safety were big issues. I saw all those pretty and perfect layettes in the store and when I seen the price I was shocked. Of course I want my child to have a crib that is safe, but not so pricey.
Here are a few things to consider before buying a crib….
- Wood - higher quality woods include cherry, oak, maple and ash. Beech, birch and pine are also good quality woods.
- Hardware - Hidden or exposed? Hidden hardware has a cleaner look and is quieter.
- Convertible Cribs - This refers to cribs that are able to convert into a toddler bed and a twin down the road. This is not always the best option to buy because many cribs that offer this feature make you buy a conversion kit that may cost you some extra money.
- Mattress Support - Look under the mattress and see what is holding it up. The best material to hold a mattress up are metal springs, not a board, not straps, not metal bars. Think of what would be best to support a jumping toddler.
- Gate Release - The most common way to release a gate is the knee-push. Just pull up slightly, push your knee against the gate and release. There’s also the fold-down gate which is rarely used today, the double-trigger gate (used in lower quality cribs) and the stationary gate which is great because you don’t have to worry about hardware breaking but the downfall is it isn’t great for shorter parents.
Good luck on your search and I hope this will help ease some of the worries of buying your crib!
