DMOZ and How It Effects Your PageRank.
DMOZ and How It Effects Your Page Rank.
By Garry Conn
I started really getting serious designing pages in the late 90’s, around 1997. Some of the first sites I created were made manually using notepad and Frontpage express. Back then the things needed in order to create a popular and heavily visited site are different than what is needed today. But… there are a few things that I personally think still work.
Last night I visited dmoz.org, It’s been months since my last visit… which is so weird, because back in the day, I was glued to that site, and participated in the volunteer editing. Since that time, I have lost interest in the program as well as my editor account info. Anyway, back in the day, getting your site listed here was like a major achievement. On that note: still today, getting your site listed here is a challenge. However, by today’s standards… people don’t feel that its really worth the time and effort, because with the evolution of how search engines find new content, dmoz.org is coined as being obsolete, a ghost town, etc.
One thing that I did notice last night while searching dmoz, was the fact that most all of the pages listed in this directory have high PageRank ratings. Why this is… I am not sure. I would need to research this further… if you have an opinion or knowledge about this, your comments on that matter could help as well. At any rate, the purpose of this post is more less written to communicate to you, that for whatever reason… pages listed in dmoz.org (regardless of being an obsolete technology) have a high PageRank, and that it might NOT be a bad idea to invest the time into getting your site listed into the directory.
Submitting your site isn’t really all that difficult. The hard part is getting your site approved. At this point in time, I am unsure if new sites are even being added. I spent a little bit of time trying to figure this out. On the dmoz.org, there isn’t a section that shows newly listed sites… such as what Yahoo does on their directory page. I would suggest figuring this out first. If dmoz.org is not accepting new sites into their directory, then submitting your site would be a total waste of time. However, if dmoz.org is accepting new sites into their directory, then adding yours, I would imagine would be an excellent way to get a higher PageRank rating.
I will be adding to this post after I spend some more time researching this. However, if you have some answers, thoughts, or suggestions… please do publish a comment. Below are a few references that will help you learn more about dmoz.org and the Open Directory Project:
As I mentioned earlier, comments are welcome… if you can contribute and add to this, please accept my invitation to do so!
