Why is Thunderbird unrecommended?
December 4th, 2006 at 4:07 pm
Answer:
Several security related problems have been discovered in Mozilla and derived products such as Mozilla Thunderbird. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project identifies the following vulnerabilities:
Tomas Kempinsky discovered that malformed FTP server responses could lead to denial of service.
Ulrich Kühn discovered that the correction for a cryptographic flaw in the handling of PKCS-1 certificates was incomplete, which allows the forgery of certificates.
“shutdown” discovered that modification of JavaScript objects during execution could lead to the execution of arbitrary JavaScript bytecode.
Jesse Ruderman and Martijn Wargers discovered several crashes in the layout engine, which might also allow execution of arbitrary code.
Igor Bukanov and Jesse Ruderman discovered several crashes in the JavaScript engine, which might allow execution of arbitrary code.
This update also addresses several crashes, which could be triggered by malicious websites and fixes a regression introduced in the previous Mozilla update.

Mozilla Thunderbird is something that I can do without. I will keep using Gmail until I either get Windows Vista or an Apple computer. I don’t use Outlook Express 6.0 too much, but I would use that over Thunderbird any day.

You missed the Windows grandaddy of them all - Eudora.
It may not have the glitz of the MS offerings, but it has stood the test of time, lasting better than a decade, through various versions.
After dumping Outlook 2003, I’ve not had a single security issue, a single missed mail check or a single choke, running through my server.
I really enjoyed the one comment I saw through one of your links…
I don’t think anyone could’ve said it any better.
Of course, Mr. I-Love-GMail, why would you be interested in real email?

Oh… I don’t know, just to have something new again, I guess. I used to use Outlook Express for years. I have always had my Yahoo email as a back up. Then when Gmail came out as “hard to get” invites that were selling on eBay for hundreds of dollars (I still can’t believe that!) I landed one free through orkut. From there my invites grew like a Christmas tree farm. Some how through all that, I started liking the service. I really do enjoy how it groups emails like conversations. It wasn’t much longer when Google did practically the same thing with Google Groups Beta.
I do like Gmail… I like it a lot. I just wish there was a desktop client I could use for my domains pop accounts that had similar features. One thing I don’t like about Gmail is the fact that I do have to be online to use it.
The main reason why I am looking into different email options if because I am using dial up on my laptop computer and Gmail is so slow to load.
I would like to have a good client for checking my email on both my laptop as well as my desktop. I imagine I would simply leave copy of message on server, unless I delete from either the desktop or laptop.
Also, I think it’s time I get a more professional email address: MyName@MyDomain.com I think it looks better.

I agree with you there. To me, I’ve always looked at the Hotmails, the Yahoos, the GMails, the whatevers, as the thing you get when you can’t have anything else. You know, the person who can’t afford a computer, so they use the one at the library or at work.
People pay money for personalized license plates, hideous tattoos to look different, custom wheels so their car doesn’t look like everyone else’s. They once didn’t want to pay for email - it once cost more - so the ad-supported freebies became the big thing with the computer disadvantaged. Sometimes, folks used one as a catch-all email addy, to reduce spam. These days, the only reason to have one is when your ISP offers you only 5 or 7 addresses and you need 9 (but don’t want to pay for more). Not everyone has their own domain or their own Web hosting account, so they can’t just add email boxes as it suits them.
But for those who do, or who have extra email addresses available through their ISP…

Now is not the best time to try Eudora because they are going to be going open source sometime during the first half of 2007. Right now, it cost $19.95 for the full version. I can get the sponsored mode or even the light mode. I would rather have the full version. However, this will be free in a few months. I would imagine that it would be better to wait instead of spend the $20.00 for an email client.
I was thinking about Gmail for Domains… that seems interesting!
December 4th, 2006 at 10:20 pm
Actually, I’d rather have the full version now - because I may not like the next one.
However, the only things missing on the sponsored mode are things most folks would never miss - and the add is a tiny corner on the lower left - not noticed unless you want to stare at it.
Me? I’ve bought Eudora since V1, missing out only on V6. I should’ve never opted to switch over to Outlook - but I did and now I am back. Eudora’s spam features crush anything the Mozilla Fraudation has come out with and has some pretty slick little extras, that no one else has even tried to copy - like the ability to redirect an email, with or without notification (this is handy if you accidently get the wife’s or boss’ messages) and MoodWatch. The latter prejudges messages, both in and out. Are you sure you want to send that 3 pepper email? maybe you should walk away, get a Coke, then come back and read it again before sending it.
It was worth $50 in the old days, $39.95 last year and $19 now. But, if you’d prefer, you can have it free with one little non-reciprocal ad. Or, you can have a limited functionality version without an ad and without cost.

“Starting in the first half of 2007, Eudora will be rooted in the Mozilla Thunderbird e-mail application.”

Yeah, if you don’t like Thunderbird, you’re not going to like what they’re about to do with Eudora.
