Google Defends Net Neutrality

I have been following the net neutrality debate for quite some time now.  If any of you are unfamiliar with the term, I have posted an article on its definition on one of my sites, technews.jdsblog.

With that being said, I assure you that it is an issue that we need to worry about.  In essence, government is trying to place an access restriction on the Internet, such that you pay for how much you use.  Almost like a toll road, if you want great access, you pay for it.  If you don’t use it much, you pay less.  As bloggers, developers, researchers, and the like, I know that you are like me and live on the web…  Posted below is some food for thought..

Net Neutrality debates continue to occur, but Google has weighed in with a great argument…  The possibility that new start ups could be waylaid because of restrictions placed on accessing the Internet.  This is of primary interest to all webmasters who are seeking the next web property launch.  It could definitely impact innovation in ways that are not beneficial to anyone!

“I’m not worried so much about Google in this regard,” David Drummond, Google’s general counsel, said at a 90-minute debate organized here by the Progress and Freedom Foundation. “I’m worried about the small innovators at the edge of the networks.”

In the mid-1990s, when company founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin were creating what would become the world’s most popular search engine, Drummond said they “didn’t think about who we had to talk to on the network to make sure users could use the Google search engine.”

“This is pre-garage,” Drummond said about the period. “These guys are in a dorm room…Are we going to go worldwide and talk to carriers everywhere to cut deals?”

Who is to say that people don’t start creating their own personal wireless Internet?

It would be hard to link everyone in… But who is to say that if I opened up my wireless to accept incoming connections to people within its range, and they did the same thing with their network and so forth… could you not recreate your own Internet?

Common response… well, which computer would connect to the REAL Internet? Answer… NONE… its a new Internet. This new Internet is accessable thru a wireless connection that is part of the little private new Internet. If need be, some of these people might have a second phone line to use to connect to it as well. People that are a little more well off than others who also support the cause might fork out a little more to get a switch box which allows for multiple dial in connections… someone might get a T1 line? Who knows… but is that not how the current Internet started? One computer from I think San Jose called another computer at Harvard? Or something like that? The Internet as we know it… started with just two computers? Maybe I am wrong… but I do know that anyone can create their OWN Internet… we all just need to pool together that have the same interest in mind… Far fetched? Maybe… but so was the original idea of the first Internet!

Excellent point Garry! Welcome to the emergence of Darknets :0) The other side of the internet.

“A Darknet is a private virtual network where users only connect to people they trust. Typically such networks are small, often with fewer than 10 users each. In its most general meaning, a Darknet can be any type of closed, private group of people communicating, but the name is most often used specifically for file sharing networks.” thanks to wikipedia.

I am actually in the final stages of releasing a forum dedicated to the subject!!!! It should be ready in a couple of days.

Cool… be sure to come back here and post a comment with the URL. Of if you want to create a new post here on Blog The Internet, explaining in detail what a Darknet is… maybe provide a few references about it and announce the new forum that you have created and talk about what the site will offer and how it will be useful to people.

Sounds pretty cool and look forward to checking it out.
