Microsoft’s Red Ring of Death

If you own or plan on purchasing an Xbox 360, than this is a must read article.

What is the Red Ring of Death? Xbox 360 owners knows exactly what this is. A circle of flashing LED lights around the power button that indicates a massive hardware failure.

Microsoft is saying that it could incur costs as high as $1.15 billion during its 4th quarter to fix broken consoles and extend warranties from one year to three years from the date of purchase.

Game players have been ranting on online message boards about the Red Ring of Death ever since Microsoft launched the console in November 2005. Some Xbox 360 owners have returned their consoles to Microsoft for repairs, only to have the system fail a second, third or even fourth time.

By extending the warranty on Red Ring-plagued systems to three years, Microsoft set a standard unprecedented in the video game business and highly unusual in the consumer electronics industry. But even with the three-year warranty, some Xbox 360 owners will likely continue to face the Red Ring of Death and shipments to Microsoft for repairs.

I have an Xbox 360 and I haven’t seen the “Red Ring of Death” yet, but I don’t play games all too often either.

Good luck to you Xbox fans!
