Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 Is Here
- by Vexation
The long awaited full version of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 7 is here.
Gone are the betas, the release candidates, the days of being a guinea pig trying out the latest software. Instead, we have the full version, and it runs far better than did RC1.
This puppy is lean. On a Core2 Duo machine, with 4GB of RAM and XP Pro SP2, I currently have 9 tabs open & IE7 is drawing 62,400K of memory. Pulled up alongside, I have an instance of Opera, using the exact same tabs and it is pulling 154,200K. I also have pulled up Firefox, both in V1.5 and V2 iterations, again with the same tabs open. V1.5 is hogging 400,000K and V2 is pigging out on (gasp) 589,478K. Both FF versions are loaded with identical extensions, designed to give FF most of IE’s capabilities.
Do you have a half gig of memory sitting around to be abused by some half-wit browser? XP runs best with at least 1GB of memory at its disposal. Toss in Firefox with absolutely nothing else, and you’ve sucked down 1.5GB of memory. Add an anti-virus app and an anti-spyware utility and you’re now needing 2GB. Run anything more and you’ll be using a lot of virtual (read slower) memory cached on your hard drive.
I’ve spent a good portion of the day running hack attacks from both a Mac box and a UNIX box and I found IE7 at least as stout as Opera, while both versions of Firefox were far simpler to compromise across my network.
Pick up the all new IE7 by clicking here. Then you can experience some real security, instead of what some kid who can’t afford Office says you need. While you’re at it, rediscover what that extra half GB of memory Firefox was sucking down can really do for your PC experience.

True that… I am totally sold on IE. Excellent post, it would have been another day or so until I figured out that Microsoft released the final for Internet Explorer 7. Thanks for the heads up.
Wow… those stats are crazy. I can’t believe how much of a resource hog Firefox is. My Emachine computer came with 512 megs of ram… so add that into the mix and I am doomed! LOL!
BTW, I still haven’t gotten around to re-installing windows xp yet… I really need to, but my dvd burner that came with the system went bad, and the only way I can back up my stuff is on CDR which will take forever, and not to mention that some files exceed 700 meg.
Oh well… I guess all that is my problem. LOL
I might be getting a new system soon, hopefully…. Walmart has a pretty cool (basic) computer for a little under $300. I don’t rememebr all the specs, but it seemed like a good deal. I don’t need anything crazy… I don’t play games anymore, I just surf the web, and update my blog… a second computer is so very needed.

Never EVER buy a computer at Walmart. Talk about computers that are ordered at a cut rate using Walmart’s strong-arm tactics.
Dell starting at $359

Man… that is crazy how cheap computers are today. Yes, it’s still $359 dollars… but you sure do get a lot for your money. I do like Dell, everyone I talk to is happy with their Dell.

IE7 promises to fix few CSS Compatibilty issues, so its no more called as a Developers Nightmare, Hurray !!
October 19th, 2006 at 5:25 pm
The only issue with Dell is their customer service and/or tech support. If you need hand holding, Dell is not the way to go. If you can figure out your own issues, there is nothing wrong with Dell.
Well, except for the fact everytime I go to the Dell site, I end up looking at a computer that is over $6,000…

@Thilak
What css issues is IE having? Clue me in… also what kind of developer are we talking about? Web site development? If that is the case, then I have to disagree with that. Because it seems that everytime I design a site and make sure it looks good in FF, typically it looks like crap in IE. However, when I design a site that looks good in IE, 9 out of 10 times it also looks good in FF. How is that a nightmare? Sounds more to me like a solution to a problem. Back on css issues…. I don’t know about you, but I would rather have a few CSS issues instead of having my computer raped by hackers and my system robbed of resources by running Firefox. At one point in time I did use Firefox as my main Web browser, but man I fought my way out of that cloud, and totally see how much better IE is.
@Vex
I would love to have a Dell laptop… man those things look good. I hear you on tech support… I would expect that a phone call into support would get me a person of broken English reading from a screen that prompts him what to say…. LOL. $6000, man you are nuts!!! For a computer? What does this computer do? For $6000 I would expect it to walk my dog, wash my car, never crash, etc…. LOL! Which computer are you looking at, btw?

I got kicked off YouTube over two months ago. The reason? Contributing to the success of their service. I uploaded a good number of videos to YouTube, almost none of which I owned the copyright to, all of which I got from other sources on the internet. My first video, the “banned” Xbox 360 ad, was for a time the second most watched video on YouTube, with close to two million viewings…

Mark D,
I am not sure if you got mixed up on posts? I have a post called “Will YouTube.com Make Good Use of Publicity“, perhaps your comment was intended for that?
I haven’t invested anytime into your situation other than to post the section of their policy for you to view…

Vex,
I sent you an email last night about IE7… can you check to see if you got it?
Look forward to your response,

Ralph,
I am having trouble with IE7. It seems that when I try to close tabs, IE freezes up. Eventually I get the screen where I can submit the error, and then shortly after that IE shuts down.
I tried reinstalling IE7 last night; however, I am still noticing the problem. It happens very frequently and its creating a little bit of frustration because I am forced to open new windows now because the tabs aren’t stable enough and I have constantly been losing draft work.
How can I fix this problem? If the solution is complicated, like re-format the computer… then how do I go back to RC? Because that worked FLAWLESS for two months until I updated to the final.
Look forward to your response… and sorry to hear about the system troubles. I hope you get things back to the way you like.

Actually, I think I might have fixed the problem… but only time will tell. I disabled the del.icio.us toolbar and so far, again not much time has gone by yet at all, things seem to be better. I am going to just continue on as I normally did before and see what happens.
If you still have any suggestions, please go ahead and still post them… as they might be things that are also contributing to the problem…

$16,000 dollars can just about buy you a nice new car! Wow, I am not sure what most people would choose… I can tell you that I would love to have the computer! But more likely I would choose the car…. but actually I would likely choose neither! I am still waiting for that money tree I bought at Wal-mart to start blooming dollar bills? Hmm… when do these tress start to bloom? Oh well… maybe one day soon!

I have to say I too had huge problems with the new IE7. Everything was perfect whilst it was RC (and I remember discussing that with you a little when the latest one had come out), but once I updated to the release version it just went haywire.
Not only did all the buttons etc disappear from the taskbar on my desktop, IE7 wouldn’t open up at all whenever I clicked on it and I kept getting the error message, so I tried to see if I could get it back to the RC, which naturally I couldn’t. So I did a rollback thinking that might help, and although I got the buttons back on my desktop taskbar, the browser just had the address bar and homepage. That was it. No buttons or anything.
I only managed to fix it by uninstalling IE7 and going back to IE6.
October 22nd, 2006 at 9:39 pm
Man I am sorry to hear that you have been having so much trouble with IE7 and was forced to go back to IE6. I was using the RC version for what it would seem at least two months…. it was awesome! Never had any trouble at all. When I downloaded and installed IE7 Final, I had trouble when closing tabs… the program would simply freeze up and then eventually crash and shut down… (discussed above).
As it turned out, I was having an issue with the del.ico.ous toolbar… once I disabled the toolbar, IE7 starting working fine. So, I am guessing that the toolbar might have some issues and should be corrected soon, hopefully… because I liked that toolbar.
That stinks that you are using IE6 again… IE7 is so much better. I wonder if you were to tell more about your situation, if someone on BTI would be able to help you get it going?
Talk to you soon,
Garry

On Friday, eWeek released an article which was generally favorable to the latest version of Firefox, dubbed version 2.0. In it, I couldn’t help but notice the following:
Ease of configuration and breadth of configuration crowns go to Opera and IE - no questions about it. Now, the basic Firefox application is a pretty good one, if you don’t mind using only ½ browser. To get it up to speed and to the capabilities of IE or Opera, you had to add in those infernal ‘extensions’ that hose up the works and make the pretty decent Firefox into a hacker’s delight, filled with security holes and sucking down memory like a sailor downs hooch on Friday night. Now with V2.0, Firefox is no longer ½ a browser. It is now closer to ¼ browser.
Get past the teething pains of IE7’s RC releases and try it again - clean install, nothing else running - and see the difference with the full release version. If you can’t stomach that, then give Opera a try. A crippled Opera or IE is twice the browser Firefox is.

1. What are you smoking?
2. IE 7 is the buggiest thing I have seen from MS to date, and to release it as a critical patch was a smack in the face to many companies. Ever try to view a Excel page with in the browser? Where are the menus? try to explain that to a secretary or less technical person.
3. How exactly to you read 9 webpages at the same time?
4. While I will not get into various contents that could have been in the webpages you view there could be more than a few reasons for the use of ram and I would argue that most are unrelated to the browser itself. Things like JAVA, FLASH, and etc…
5. Why not explain these “HACK ATTACKS” you are talking about because last time I check IE gets patched at least monthly from Microsoft.
Firefox and Opera blow away IE 7, hands down… Get a clue!
Sincerely,
