Should You Buy Inflatable Swimming Pools

Outdoor inflatable swimming pools can be tons of fun, but there is some debate about whether the cost of buying one of these affordable swimming pools is cost effective compared to spending more money on a real above ground pool that will last longer. The main question consumers have is, “How long will an inflatable swimming pool last?” Most people are concerned that they will purchase an inflatable pool, which does save money compared to the cost of a regular above ground swimming pool, that the pool will not last long… maybe a season or two. If that is the case, the debate is simple: should I save money and purchase a pool that will last only a few seasons, or should I buy and have a professional install a real above ground pool.

Advantages of buying an inflatable swimming pool

The advantages of buying an inflatable swimming pool over having a professional installer install a traditional above ground pool are as follows:

  • Cost. The inflatable swimming pools are affordable and can be purchased at any leader retailer such as Wal-Mart, in a kit. The kit includes everything you need. Pool, ladder, basic chemical set up, etc.
  • Easy. These pools are pretty easy to set up. You need level ground, a lot of sand, and a hose.
  • Fun. The pools fill up quick. You can be swimming in about a day.

Disadvantages of buying an inflatable swimming pool

With the advantages there are always disadvantages. Here is a list of personal reasons why I think it is a disadvantage to purchasing an inflatable swimming pool.

  • Weak pump. If you don’t swim in the pool daily. It is hard for the pump to circulate the water on its own.
  • Small. These pools do appear to be large, but if you have a lot of people swimming, it can become cramped.
  • Appearance. People are not going to invest additional money towards building a desk around a portable pool. The appearance is somewhat eye straining to you and your neighbors.

Overall I would recommend anyone to buy an inflatable swimming pool if you cost is a main consideration. With proper care and daily use, you can get many years of enjoyment out of these pools. Keeping up with the chemicals and keeping the water clean is easy, because you are not dealing with a lot of water (5000 gallons). However, you do have to swim in the pool frequently because the standard pump that comes with the pool is pretty weak and doesn’t do a very good job circulating the water. When I swim I have a net with me and I spend a few minutes cleaning the surface of the water.

If cost isn’t a consideration, I would recommend having a professional install an above ground pool or even better a below ground pool. But then you are looking at thousands of dollars compared to a few hundred dollars.
