Top Five Tips On How To Get Listed In DMOZ:

(#1) Choose the correct category!, don’t sell yourself on thinking it belongs in the “more popular one”… it doesn’t. And if you request that category, they will trash your application, and never even take the time to send you a reply. An easy way to find out the most relevant category for your site, is to take about 20 sites that are similar to yours, and make note of the category they are listed in. Remember if you can’t be honest with yourself and still insist on using the category that “You Want!” then your site will never get listed… but if you are keeping things real, after taking notes of the categories where the 20 sites are listed, choose the one most relevant for your site. If you do that… and keep things real, you almost have your foot in the door.
(#2) Have unique content on your site. Content that you have personally written… content that is actually interesting… and content that is helpful, appealing, or entertaining. Don’t copy someone else’s content. So many people find a story and just copy it and publish it. Be more creative than that. If you find an article that would seem appealing to viewers on your site, publish a story about it and talk about it… provide a link to the original article as a reference (BTW, in the post editor, trackback it too). This in essence creates a new and unique story. You will find in a short amount of time that this little cycle will continue down the line, when in just a few months… someone will create a post on their blog site tracking back to your article as a reference. To get listed in DMOZ, unique content is a must!
(#3) Make sure that your site is designed well. Proper code, whether is may be html, php, asp, etc… is highly important. It is incredibly important to make sure that there are no code or script errors. And, I am sorry… Firefox users, if you design your site to look good only in Firefox and not Internet Explorer, there is a good chance that there are script errors appearing in IE. If an editor finds script errors or coding errors, whoosh…. your application is thrown away, and you are left wondering if your site will make it, for months and months and months.
(#4) WHO ARE YOU!!!! HOW DO I CONTACT YOU!!!! Editors look to see if you publish your contact information. If you sell products or participate in affiliate programs, or provide any kind of professional service, DMOZ editors need to see more than a lousy email address. If you aren’t willing to tell people who you are, then a dmoz editor will help you keep it that way.
(#5) Be very careful that you don’t have broken links or images that don’t load. An editor considers a broken link, a broken site… and no DMOZ editor will approve a broken site. If there is only one broken link in your site, that is still one too many. Getting a listed in DMOZ puts you at a higher standard. You either have to step up, or be just yet another site online.
