Do you feel safe walking to your car after work? Do you get nervous walking to your car when leaving the store? How prepared are you?

If your car is parked far away from the building you are exiting, that can be nerve racking. At night, you may feel like someone is creeping up behind. All in all, you don’t feel safe. It’s a long walk to your car at night and with your mind racing, anything can happen. The question really to ask is if you are safe? Are you prepared to deal with the unexpected?

If you get approached by a robber with a gun or weapon who is demanding money. Lay low, and don’t try to escalate the situation. Most robbers don’t want to cause physical harm to people, they just want money.  But make no mistake, if you step in their way with them trying to score the loot, then they may resort to physical harm.

All in all these are tricky situations. You have to be smart and quickly assess the risks. If someone wants money, just give it to them. If someone wants nothing more than to clearly harm you physically… Fight, kick, scream and throw down. The point is to be smart and to try to evaluate the situation. You don’t want to get killed over $5.00 but on the flip side if you are a target for getting jumped, hurt or killed… defending yourself is a different story.

There are self defense classes people can join. Some, in fact, are free to join and don’t cost any money. Check your local paper for events that offer free self defense classes. Also, there are things that you can keep with you such as mace. However, fighting robbers off with various weapons can be difficult as you have to spend time reaching into your purse or pocket to get out the mace.

All in all, be smart and do everything that is necessary to preserve your health and life. If that means giving a robber your money, then do so.
